Rhodes has figured out that bear sculptures make money, but he doesn’t know how to separate his commercial projects from his personal ones.

I’ve been experimenting with using brushes with a stronger bristle texture instead of painstakingly rendering with wash brushes. It takes much less time while still massaging the part of my brain that demands me to paint everything. I personally think it works.

Hope everyone had a good Krampus day! I’ve been eating way too many gingerbread cookies and pigs in a blanket for my own good…

It may be a hot seller but maaan, there's only so many times you can do the same thing over and over again until it ends up driving you nuts! XD Was in a similar situation before so I sort of know them feels. lmao
Maybe he can make some round birbs instead for a while! XD BORBS

Oh yeah, people really underestimate the power of burnout when you've been stuck in the same commercial project for so long.

Oh, buddy! It's too real!! ;u;

This is an interesting contrast to Gideon. Here, poor Rhodes is just sick to death of his well-liked and extremely marketable bears, and on the other hand we have Gideon, living out a rich internal creative life, making noodle art only for himself. Which is better!?

I’m glad that you pointed out the contrast between him and Gideon because that was very intentional!

Poor Rhodes and his artistic crisis.
I think your brushes look great!
I especially love the wood textures here.
I'm aware I need to find a similar way to speed up my coloring, btw. It's taking ages XD

Thank you! It’s been a slog trying to come up with ways to speed up the process, but it’s coming along. Using premade textures for the wood and running the liquefy tool over it helped a lot

Yep, also a good example of the life of a commissioner who only makes art for other people.

you really have to find a good balance between personal art and commercial art, and Rhodes ain't there yet

this is such an interesting parallel you draw here with Gideon's basement of wildly creative noodle sculptures (that no-one must ever see!) and Rhodes's soul-crushing work making sellout bears... theyre both trapped by their artistic drive being used against them (gideon much more directly, but rhodes is still being made to participate in capitalism to survive using them) ... maybe it was fate this was posted on my birthday!

Thank you!!! The parallels between Gideon and Rhodes are definitely deliberate, despite their approaches to art being completely opposite. Both are high-strung guys prone to worry, trying to survive in their own way, but with forces larger than themselves holding them down. Thanks for pointing it out! 👁️👁️

“Work smarter not harder” is a phrase we should all abide by, and stuff like this is why. The bears look very cold and hard to the touch.
